I was raised a Seventh Day Adventist. I no longer attend church but do believe many of their doctrines, to this day. I will say this, one of the most important doctrines was about the destruction of the separation of church and state. It will not be a positive thing, when it happens. I don't know how far away we are from the situation in Bonhoeffer's time. We can only be sure that if a dictatorship comes to power in the USA, there are plenty of churches just waiting for the opportunity to fulfill the role the "German Christians" did in Nazi Germany. Like them, the Christian Right stands for a hyphenated Christianity, subjugating the churches to an ideology in conflict with all the main teachings of Jesus, especially the virtues of humility, compassion, and solidarity with the most vulnerable. Like Germany in the Weimar Republic, neither the churches nor society at large are prepared for the emergency we could face if Project 2025 is implemented. However, we can take some hope from this: In today's Germany, the mainstream churches oppose the far right and support democratic values.

I have the utmost respect for Burns, he asked great questions, but his guest Tippett did not offer much in the conversation. On one of the most important issues facing our nation, Christen Nationalism, she had little more than platitudes, such as that we live in interesting times and how people are working outside institutions. Now, I am open to looking at other ways of thinking, but we are staring down the gun of a violent and antidemocratic movement fueled by hate, fear and religious zeal. The old saying, the only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good people do nothing is applicable here. Religious leaders must reestablish the Christian message of love and forgiveness. They must affirm that man cannot know the mind and will of God, and therefore we cannot judge, condemn and punish others in the name of God. They must reject the hate, intolerance and violent nature of this extreme religion. Also, religious leaders must defend the rights of liberty and freedom which our democratic government is founded. For there can be no freedom of religion without the freedom from religion. It is time for all good people to stand for the values our constitution aspires to. Although our nation has failed time and time again to fully live up to those high ideals, it is our responsibility to uphold and push forward the franchise of equality and humanity.

I have become very interested in hearing the stories of Native and African Americans who give us a more diverse understanding of American history. I also wonder now how much of the immigration from Africa to Europe and from many nations to the US is linked to climate change which creates political instability to due drought and the loss of crops. I have grown more pessimistic because if the right takes much more control over Europe and the US ( many of them are climate deniers and many of them want to restrict immigration)that many people in 3rd world countries, living on islands in the oceans, and coastal communities will simply die from ocean rise and/or drought. We have heroes who are like the hobbits in LOTR.
